Faculty/Graduate Student Collaborative Workshop
Date: 04/24/12 - 04/26/12
Location: Northeastern University Marine Science Center, Nahant, MA

As part of a grant funded by the New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC), the Northeastern University Marine Science Center (MSC) and COSEE-Ocean Systems will partner to host a Faculty/Graduate Student Collaborative Workshop on April 24 - 26, 2012 at the MSC in Nahant, MA. Three faculty and ten graduate students from Northeastern University will team up to focus on concept mapping as a tool for deconstructing complex science, and as a way of reaching undergraduate audiences. The faculty will learn to create maps based on their own research interests. Afterward, faculty and graduate students will work together to fine-tune these maps for presentation to a high school-level audience.

On the final day of the workshop, local high school students will provide feedback on the graduate students' group presentations. Sustaining contact after the workshop, the graduate students will continue to work with MSC Education Director Carole McCauley to create their own personal research-based concept maps, and help to design a web resource about their collective "graduate school experience" - targeting undergraduate audiences interested in learning more about careers in the ocean sciences.
