Investigating Marine Snow
Description: There is concern that as the ocean acidifies, the amount of sticky clumps of carbohydrates excreted by phytoplankton may also increase. This could enhance the formation of marine snow. Marine snow transports carbon dioxide from the air to the bottom of the sea, and is an essential food source in the deep sea. For this reason marine snow has the capacity to dramatically alter the natural cycle of the oceans and the environment for marine life. [Source: Caitlin Arctic Survey]
