Day/Night Cycle Even More Important to Life Than Previously Suspected
Description: In all organisms, a certain amount of gene expression is rhythmic. In creatures that live on land, that rhythm is unsurprisingly tied to the circadian cycle. So these researchers studied mussels. Most of their physical activity is based on the tidal cycle. They expected the tidal cycle would be the clock that drives gene expression in mussels. However, they discovered the lion's share of gene expression in the mussels is instead driven by the circadian cycle. [Source: ScienceDaily]
