Marine Matters: High Tide on the Coast
Description: When the moon is full or new, we have a "spring tide," where the high tide is highest and the low tide is lowest. A spring tide occurs when the earth is lined up between the full moon and the sun, or when the new moon is lined up between the earth and the sun. At this point, the sun and the moon are combining their gravitational pull on the earth's oceans. This occurrence is called syzygy. [Source: Free Press]
