Record-breaking lobster catches in the Gulf of Maine may sound like one of those few happy side effects of a warming planet. In 1999 however, lobstering in Long Island Sound collapsed without warning. Unusually warm water temperatures seemed to unleash a hitherto rare infection. Shell disease claimed 80 percent of the lobster stock off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut. More than a decade later, the lobster fisheries in Long Island Sound still haven't recovered.
