Mass extinctions: Ecological diversity maintained
Description: The end-Permian extinction about 252 million years ago decimated marine life on an unprecedented scale. However, an analysis of the lifestyles of the surviving genera shows that very little functional diversity was lost at the sea floor. The authors of this paper show primary ecological modes of making a living on the sea floor remained remarkably stable in number, even though temporary losses in specific marine settings were severe.
