Chemical fertilizers chasing fish away: National Institute of Oceanography director
Description: Fish production off India's coastline has been hit because of the over-zealous use of chemical fertilizers by farmers. Some farmers apply two to three times the required amount to their fields, hoping for a bumper crop. Plants can only absorb a certain amount, and the excess nitrogen gets washed off into water bodies, eventually landing up in the sea. This produces large amounts of organic carbon, which decomposes, using up all the oxygen in the coastal waters. This drives away the fish. [Source: Times of India]
