Ocean Observing Robots Reporting Presence of Toxic Algae From Beneath the Ocean Surface
Description: Two autonomous robotic Environmental Sample Processors (ESPs), essentially underwater molecular biology laboratories enclosed in a can, are now deployed in San Pedro Bay off southern California. They are outfitted with sensors capable of detecting the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia and its potent neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). Information transmitted to shore has revealed the presence of both Pseudo-nitzschia and DA. This may signal the initiation of a bloom developing along the coast impacting a variety of wildlife and fishery resources. [Source: NOAA National Ocean Service]
