In a new study the patterns of ocean heat gain are revealed over a period as short as eight years. Thanks to a global network of profiling floats, the warming signal is shown to extend to 2,000 meters and deeper, and that it is occurring predominantly in the Southern Hemisphere ocean south of 20° S. A steady rise in the earth's heat content can be seen when ocean temperatures are measured globally and deep enough. This is consistent with the expected greenhouse gas-driven imbalance in our planet's radiation budget. [Source: Scripps Institution of Oceanography]
