Swirling Currents Deliver Phytoplankton Carbon to Ocean Depths
Description: Just as crocus and daffodil blossoms signal renewal and the start of a warmer season on land, a similar "greening" event-a massive phytoplankton bloom-unfolds each spring in the Atlantic Ocean from Bermuda to the Arctic. Here researchers investigate the transport processes of the smaller, non-sinking phytoplankton cells in the North Atlantic bloom. Their results show that swirling currents, or eddies, play a significant role in pushing non-sinking carbon to the depths of the ocean. [Source: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute]
