A team of marine researchers has discovered a three-way conflict raging at the microscopic level in the frigid waters off Antarctica over natural resources such as vitamins and iron. Oceanographers have long recognized that iron fertilization in the Southern Ocean will drive phytoplankton blooms. New research indicates that particular groups of bacteria, perhaps specifically cultivated by phytoplankton, are also important for regulating the magnitude of phytoplankton blooms by suppplying phytoplankton with vitamin B12.
