Washburn's observatory hosts free stargazing open houses
Description: This telescope at Washburn University in Kansas was built in 1896 and is comprised of two curved lenses which refract light. It also features a clock drive, which is powered by gravity. Weights gradually fall, powering the gears and causing the telescope to spin at the same speed as earth's rotation. This allows users to follow celestial objects without having to manually move the telescope around the observatory's dome. [Source: The Topeka Capital-Journal]
