Cold patch in northern Atlantic Ocean intrigues scientists
Description: A persistent cold pocket of sea surface temperatures, relative to normal, in the northern Atlantic Ocean south of Greenland has drawn the attention of many scientists. There are some who are concerned that melting Arctic ice caps - ice around the North Pole reached its fourth lowest extent in the satellite era this summer - have affected the salinity of the Atlantic Ocean with a dump of cold, fresh water.
