Carbon-Carrying Phytoplankton Population on Decline
Description: A recent study has found global diatom populations have declined by 1% per year from 1998 to 2012. Areas in the northern hemisphere were particularly affected, including the north Pacific, north Indian and equatorial Indian oceans. Diatoms rely on nutrients, such as nitrates, silicate and iron, to reach the surface layer where they live. What the study shows is the availability of these nutrients has changed due to the way they cycle within the water column. [Source: R & D magazine]
