These researchers compiled available time series data on Arctic sea ice algae blooms. They found sea ice algae blooms develop through three different phases from winter to spring. Their phenology is controlled mainly by environmental conditions, less by latitude. They found the most important factor is irradiance, regulated by snow cover on top of sea ice. They found poor data coverage hampers systematic analyses of steering environmental factors. [Source: Progress in Oceanography]
