COSEE Ocean Systems: News
Double Vision
Description: During the six first months of operation, the Jason-1 satellite was placed along the same groundtrack as TOPEX/Poseidon. Both were designed to use radar altimetry to measure the height of the ocean surface relative to the center of the Earth. Their data allows scientists to study the dynamics of ocean currents and their response to the forcing by winds and atmospheric pressure. Scientists are also using their data to develop new models of ocean tides and the Earth's gravity field. [Source: NASA Earth Observatory]
