A numerical model was applied in Chesapeake Bay to understand controls on oxygen. The model reproduced seasonal and spatial patterns in biogeochemical processes. Nutrient load experiments reveal that hypoxic volume is more sensitive to nitrogen than phosphorus. Biogeochemical oxygen uptake was dominated by water-column respiration. Elevated nitrogen loading resulted in respiration increases in seaward Bay regions. [Source: Journal of Marine Systems]
