The planet has lost 1.3 million square kilometers of forests since 1990 - an area larger than South Africa. While the Middle East and North Africa had the largest percentage increase in forest area between 1990 and 2015, the Latin America and Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa regions lost the most.
