West Coast Fish Pathogen Now Found in the East
Description: A fish pathogen similar to one previously found in the United States only in Pacific salmonids -- salmon and trout species -- has been identified for the first time in the eastern United States and in a non-salmon species, according to new research. A 2015 sampling effort found the pathogen, Dermocystidium, within cysts on the bodies of Blue Ridge sculpin, although it can cause cysts in the gills and internal organs of infected fish as well, and sometimes death.
