Mycoplasma pneumoniae spreading in Japan
Description: A health institute is urging people in Japan to promptly see a doctor if they have a constant cough, as they may be suffering from a bacterial infection called mycoplasma pneumoniae. The National Institute of Infectious Diseases says 758 cases were reported in the week to October 23rd by about 500 medical institutions around the country. That's the highest figure since record-taking began in 2009. A delay in diagnosis can lead to serious pneumonia. Infection can also cause encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, although such cases are rare. [Source: NHK World (Japan)]
