A cyclone in the desert
Description: It was a storm more ferocious than Arabia had seen for decades. When Cyclone Gonu hit Oman in the early hours of June 6 last year, it brought winds of 90mph and widespread flooding. In the Arabian Sea, wind speeds reached as high as 165mph, making Gonu a Category Five storm - the highest category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale - and blowing with similar force to hurricanes Andrew in 1992 and Katrina in 2005, two of the most destructive hurricanes to make landfall in the US.
