Fluctuations in the dynamics of the Atlantic Ocean linked to intensification of south Asian summer monsoons
Description: Coupled modeling studies have shown that a weakened Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC), where deepwater formation slows down, generates cooling in the North Atlantic and a slight warming in the South Atlantic, leading to a southward shift of the Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone. This in turn affects the climate of the Pacific and changes El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. [Source: Geophysical Research Letters]
