Ozone: New Simulation Shows Consequences Of A World Without Earth's Natural Sunscreen
Description: A team of researchers led by NASA scientist Paul Newman simulated "what might have been" if chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were not banned through the treaty known as the Montreal Protocol. The Earth's atmosphere would have lost nearly two thirds of its ozone by the year 2065. DNA-mutating UV radiation would have increased 650 percent. This would have damaged plant and animal life. It would have swelled human skin cancer rates. [Source: ScienceDaily]
