In Rwanda, a sweet alternative to deforestation
Description: Beekeepers in the Gishwati forest in northwest Rwanda had never made enough money to make a livelihood. So they would often sell wood that they had harvested from the forest, or clear trees to create pasture for cattle to supplement their income, resulting in deforestation. Now the UN has helped beekeepers to triple or quadruple their earnings by providing them with modern hives. With better harvests, beekeepers are free from the financial stresses that may have made them less able to focus on their business and more likely to turn to the forest for quick returns.
