Emissions of an ozone-destroying chemical are rising again
Description: The Montreal Protocol, signed in 1987, committed the global community to phasing out the use of CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, because they were damaging the Earth's protective ozone layer. Production of the second-most abundant CFC, CFC-11, would end completely by 2010. Now, a new analysis of long-term atmospheric measurements shows emissions of the chemical CFC-11 are rising again, most likely from new, unreported production from an unidentified source in East Asia.
