A CO2-rich gas trigger of explosive paroxysms at Stromboli basaltic volcano, Italy
Description: Stromboli volcano occasionally produces discrete explosive paroxysms that constitute a major hazard and whose origin remains poorly elucidated. It has been hypothesized these events are triggered by the fast ascent of primitive magma blobs from possibly great depth. This research paper proposes an alternative hypothesis that most of the paroxysms could be triggered by the fast upraise of CO2-rich gas pockets from the sub-volcano plumbing system.
