Based on our work since 2010, Bangor High School was provided a grant by MDIBL to send two students and two teachers to their lab for a summer
research internship to support the Lab's larger eelgrass restoration efforts. This grant allowed our STEM Academy students and teachers
to immerse themselves in a valuable research experience that included, in addition to the research, participation in a public speaking class and a
peer-reviewed and judged poster session.
Our expertise in the physical properties of sediments and macro-invertebrate identification
complemented the overall mission of the 15-person, international research team to develop a comprehensive assessment of the ecology of Frenchman
Bay. All of our work is brought back to the classroom where other students have the opportunity to explore integrated topics including ocean
acidification and human impacts on Maine's ocean resources.
