As part of the Earth Science curriculum, Maine's glacial history is presented as a theme which unifies climate change, plate
tectonics, and geomorphology. With advances in science being rooted in evidence-based interpretations, the landforms of Maine
provide some of the best tangible evidence in North America of a glacial past.
Through a grant, Target, Inc. provided funds for me to take all of my Earth Science classes (upwards of 80 students) on a field trip
to Acadia National Park to see first-hand the work of advancing and receding glaciers from 15,000 years ago. Erratics, moraines,
fjords, eskers, and many other clues for the presence of glaciers were visited, mapped, measured, and sampled so students could
appreciate the scale of the "laboratory" in which one of Earth's many dynamic systems operates.
