Location: Darling Marine Center, Walpole, ME
Attendance: Graduate students

UMaine graduate students and post docs collaborate on a concept map with researcher David Fields
UMaine graduate students and post docs collaborate on a concept map with researcher David Fields
Do detailed questions about connections between our climate and ocean keep you up at night? Do you strive to become even savvier in your communication, teaching, and team-building skills? Are you curious to employ a pedagogical tool called concept mapping?

If so, you are invited to apply for our first-ever workshop to investigate climate, ocean, and biosphere connections by teaming graduate students with prominent researchers. We are searching for 15 graduate students to interact with Drs. David Fields, Peter Jumars, Larry Mayer, Andrew Pershing and Benjamin Twining. Teams of graduate students and research scientists will delve into complex science topics together in a collaborative setting to create their own concept maps for a variety of audiences.

Graduate students will spend one and a half days at the University of Maine's Darling Marine Center in Walpole, ME. The NSF-funded program COSEE-OS will run the workshop. COSEE-OS has run a series of model workshops that team researchers and educators to synergistically improve communication of complex science topics using concept mapping and web-based tools (http://cosee.umaine.edu/tools/). This new pilot workshop challenges scientists and graduate students to open new lines of communication at the academic level.

Still not convinced? Here's what you will do/learn:

  • Identify new areas for further research in your own work
  • Learn to create a versatile concept map about your own research
  • Find ways to communicate (and practice presenting) clear, accurate science messages to your future audiences
  • Eat good free food, network with friends and faculty, walk along coastal waters, & enjoy "rural time" away from the big city of Orono
  • Contribute your time and talents to an education research study with COSEE-OS
  • Score some "pocket change" (a cool $100 stipend for your participation and efforts)

Deadline for application: January 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. Students selected to participate will be alerted no later than Jan 21st. Housing and meals at the Darling Marine Center will be covered by COSEE-OS.

This workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation and in collaboration with Rutgers University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the University of Southern California.
