OMICS Professional Development Workshop for HS Science Teachers
Date: 08/09/13 - 08/10/13
Location: University of Connecticut - Avery Point campus

The University of Connecticut, Department of Marine Sciences has limited space available in our OMICS Professional Development Institute. The Oceanic and Molecular Interpretations of Climate Science (OMICS) teacher training will run from August 9-10, 2013 at the University of Connecticut - Avery Point campus. Lodging, meals, resources and a stipend are included!

The goal of the PDI is to improve participants understanding of molecular genetic / genomic approaches to studying marine organisms and their responses to environmental variability associated with climate change.

Program highlights for 2013 will include:

  • Overview of state-of-the-art molecular genetic / genomic approaches being used by researchers to study marine zooplankton.
  • Research cruise on board the Project Oceanology R/V Enviro-Lab to sample Long Island Sound and collect living zooplankton for taxonomic, ecological and molecular analysis.
  • Lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and laboratory training in molecular protocols and data analysis with UConn faculty, staff, and students.

Focus of the Institute

This Professional Development Institute will focus on ongoing omics studies of marine zooplankton, with tours, presentations, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises in field and laboratory. Our goal is to introduce and explain the fascinating world of molecular analysis of marine organisms, with a focus on understanding and predicting responses to climate change, including warming, acidification, and disruption of biological communities. Participants will gain experience with selected molecular techniques, including DNA sequencing, bioinformatic approaches to visualizing and analyzing genetic, genomic, and transcriptomic data.
