Maine EPSCoR High School Internship Program
Date: 06/22/15 - 08/14/15
Location: Orono, ME
Attendance: High School Students

Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine oversees and implements the state's National Science Foundation's Experimental Programs in Stimulating Competitive Research (EPSCoR) programs. These statewide programs advance Maine's research capacity and competitiveness for a sustainable future through cutting edge science, STEM education, workforce development, cyberinfrastructure, and economic development.

Maine EPSCoR is excited to announce the Maine EPSCoR High School Internship Program at the University of Maine in Orono for the summer of 2015. This program provides Maine high school students with a paid, hands-on opportunity to participate in cutting edge research with faculty, postdocs, and graduate students at the UMaine. Students can gain real-world experience in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields that might include: chemistry, marine science, engineering, computer science, economics, etc. This research experience provides an excellent opportunity to explore potential STEM careers, learn new skills, and gain valuable work experience in research.

Eligibility
Any Maine high school student who is 16 years of age or older as of June 1, 2015, and has a current overall average grade of 80 (3.0 GPA) or higher is eligible for this program. Priority will be given to students who are juniors. Students must also be within commuting distance of the University of Maine (housing is not provided). Students who apply by the deadline will be selected through a competitive review process based on their application materials.

Student Commitment
This program is designed to provide students with a true research experience, and should not be considered “just a summer job.” If selected, students must: 1) commit to working a minimum of minimum of 7 weeks during the period of June 22, 2015 to August 14, 2015; 2) attend the program orientation session; 3) attend safety training sessions and pass required safety tests; 4) write weekly reports and submit them to their adviser if required; 5) write a final report and complete a program evaluation to be submitted by your last day of employment; and 6) present on their research project at the program’s summer research symposium in August. Students will be paid at a Level II, Step I rate (currently $7.60/hour) for their internship, and will be responsible for their own transportation.
