COSEE-OS Holds Educator-Scientist Climate Change Workshop - 11.24.2008

COSEE-OS PI Annette deCharon and Umaine Faculty member Collin Roesler collaborate on a concept map
COSEE-OS held their Educator-Scientist Climate Change Workshop on Ocean-Climate Connections at the Darling Marine Center on November 22-23, 2008. Funded by the National Science Foundation, this workshop series was designed to promote collaborative learning between educators and scientists in order to create online learning resources that align with National Science Education Standards and Climate and Ocean Literacy Principles.

For this event, 14 educators were matched with 5 ocean and climate scientists from the University of Maine to improve their collective understanding of Earth's major ocean - climate systems. COSEE-OS staff facilitated interactions between internationally known scientists and informal and formal educators to infuse cutting-edge research topics into educational products such as concept maps that hyperlink to scientist-vetted images, video, news items, and educational resources. Workshop topics ranged from the influence of watersheds on climate change, an explanation of ocean aerosol models, exploring seasonal changes in the Gulf of Maine, factors influencing ocean acidification, and the idea of observable changes in plants as an indicator for climate change.
