UMaine Faculty to Offer Semester Course Funded by COSEE-OS and the National Science Foundation - 01.07.2008

The semester course Teaching Physical Sciences by Ocean Inquiry provides a unique opportunity for marine science students to incorporate an educational aspect into their science backgrounds. Whether they intend to be classroom teachers, research scientists, or informal educators, these students are making an investment in their future by learning strategies to effectively communicate ocean science.

This course focuses on physical concepts in marine science. Goals are to 1) help young marine scientists to more effectively communicate their subject; 2) encourage science majors to pursue professions where they simultaneously serve science and education; and 3) create a greater awareness among scientists about the need for outreach.

This course was offered for the first time during Spring semester 2007 and is supported by the National Science Foundation as part of the COSEE-OS program.
