Mary Jane Perry Presents an Introduction to the North Atlantic Bloom Project - 07.13.2011

North Atlantic ocean color
On July 7, Mary Jane Perry (Professor, School of Marine Sciences, University of Maine) presented an overview of the North Atlantic Bloom Project and described the fundamentals of how phytoplankton bloom in the ocean. Follow-up webinars will cover:
  • How modeling has helped researchers to better comprehend the physical dynamics behind what triggers the spring bloom
  • How to measure a moving, changing swatch of ocean at different scales, and the technology needed to collect meaningful data
  • The ecological changes that occur in plankton communities and how they are studied, and
  • What the dynamics of the spring bloom will mean for scientists concerned about carbon and climate.
