Physics of the Bloom - 07.20.2011

In our second North Atlantic Bloom webinar, Amala Mahadevan and Melissa Omand (WHOI) explained how modeling has helped researchers better comprehend the physical dynamics behind what triggers the spring bloom. Follow-up webinars will cover:

  • How to measure a moving, changing swatch of ocean at different scales, and the technology needed to collect meaningful data (Eric D’Asaro, Principal Oceanographer and Professor, APL-UW)
  • The ecological changes that occur in plankton communities and how they are studied (Nicole Poulton and Ivona Cetinic, University of Maine, School of Marine Sciences), and
  • What the dynamics of the spring bloom will mean for scientists concerned about carbon and climate (Craig Lee, Principal Oceanographer and Associate Professor, APL-UW).
