UMaine Graduate Students Learn What to Expect in the Classroom - 01.31.2012

Graduate students work on activities illustrating ocean concepts
On January 20th, 2012, COSEE-OS held a one-day workshop for UMaine School of Marine Sciences graduate students interested in participating in the School District Collaborations (SDC) program. SDC programming aims to:

  • Follow educators into classrooms to help integrate ocean topics
  • Bring real science into the classroom
  • Create lasting partnerships between teachers and grad students
  • In the future, work with teachers to create new curriculum for teaching and integrating ocean concepts into classrooms

The workshop familiarized graduate students with hands-on activities illustrating ocean concepts, provided them with tools and tips for teacher and student interactions and expectations, and helped them create concept maps based on their graduate research using the COSEE-OS Concept Map Builder. The participants also had a chance to gain some first-hand knowledge and advice from local Bangor Area High School earth and environmental sciences teacher, Ted Taylor, during a Q&A session.
