SMS Graduate Students and Post-Docs Pilot Collaborative Workshop with COSEE-OS
Category: COSEE Conference Resources, For Graduate Students, For Scientists
Resource Type: Web-Based
Date Posted: 04/26/2010

In response to interest from graduate students and research faculty, COSEE-OS has adapted its “scientist-educator collaborative” workshop model to focus on graduate student professional development, and on opening new lines of communication between faculty and graduate students. This new workshop, held at the Darling Marine Center in February of 2010, had the goal of exposing students to tools and other pedagogical techniques related to communicating complex science content to non-scientist audiences.

Using concept mapping and web-based tools, workshop groups developed a “consensus” concept map based on the researchers’ initial focus question and presented it to their peers. Participants included seventeen graduate and post-doctorate students from the University of Maine (UMaine) School of Marine Sciences (SMS) working collaboratively with five ocean science researchers to develop concept maps based on targeted focus questions. On the final day of the workshop, students showcased their maps to Waterville High School students, who thoughtfully critiqued their presentations. Most (94%) graduate students thought the process helped them think through the topics learned in the workshop. They gave an average rating of 6.9 for “quality of interaction” with faculty (out of possible 7 on a Likert scale). Post-workshop focus groups will allow COSEE-OS to collect more data in order to continue to refine future workshop models.
