As part of their Oceanography segment in Mr. Taylor’s freshman Earth Science class at Bangor High School, students are asked to prepare a concept map of their broad understanding of oceans. They do this at three different times during the segment:

  1. At the beginning to see what they already know about the oceans
  2. Near the mid-point of the segment to gain practice in organizing their thoughts and visualizing the concepts as they study different content areas within oceanography
  3. At the end of the segment to see how their knowledge has grown and expanded during the 4-week segment

The project is entirely digital using the COSEE-OS Concept Map Builder and Mr. Taylor’s e-mail. To reinforce the idea that concept maps are products of individual effort and understandings, several student maps are projected by computer and LCD to discuss merits and share ideas. Following are maps created by two of Mr. Taylor’s 2010 Freshman class.
