One way that Dr. Johnson knows she has support at her institution is the fact that her colleagues – other members of the science
faculty – get involved in her programs. They come to the presentation that the SUMRI high school interns make at the end of the
summer, which more than once has resulted in a student coming back to work in one of her colleagues' labs. And on more than one
occasion, one of Crystal's REU undergrads has been invited to work with other faculty.
In addition, Crystal has managed to start up a program that involves high school students working in a research lab at LSU – which is a
first, and was helped along tremendously by the input of Dr. Sheri Wischusen, Director of Undergraduate Research Education at LSU.
And LSU faculty have thanked her, suggesting additional schools to go to for recruiting new students.
