What has the SPURS central buoy been measuring - and why?
What has the SPURS central buoy been measuring - and why?
Presented by Tom Farrar (WHOI), this map explores the instrumentation and measurements contained on the SPURS central buoy - and how those measurements are combined to attempt to calculate a "salt budget" for the SPURS research area.

SPURS Ocean Thinking: From Skin To Deep
SPURS Ocean Thinking: From Skin To Deep
Presented by Dr. Stephen Riser (University of Washington) this map explores how technologies such as Argo floats can help researchers see long-term changes in salinity - from the ocean's surface to its deepest depths.

Map 1: How does the atmosphere affect land?
Map 1: How does the atmosphere affect land?
The atmosphere affects land through the exchange of freshwater and heat - creating the patterns of weather and vegetation seen across the globe. This can create wet rainy reigions, or desert regions - both on land and in the ocean. (Map 1 of 3)

Map 2: How does the atmosphere affect the ocean?
Map 2: How does the atmosphere affect the ocean?
The atmosphere can add or remove water due to precipiation and evaporation, and can also add or remove heat from the ocean. Both the freshwater content and temperature of ocean water determine its density - ultimately responsible for the structure and motion of the ocean. (Map 2 of 3)

Map 3: How does seawater move across latitudes - and why do we care?
Map 3: How does seawater move across latitudes - and why do we care?
When the properties of water are changed - including its temperature and density - freshwater may leave or enter a system, and this lateral transport, driven by currents and the Earth's rotation serve to move water across latitudes. This lateral movement of water is key to understanding long-term climactic changes in the ocean. (Map 3 of 3)

The Heat Capacity of Water
The Heat Capacity of Water
This concept map explains heat capacity in water (i.e. heat storage in water molecules) and how this enables life to be sustained on Earth. It also depicts how heat travels through the ocean (slowly) versus through the atmosphere (quickly).

The Phases of Water
The Phases of Water
This map explains the structure of a water molecule and how changes in the structure of a water molecule create different "states" or phases of water: solid, gas, and liquid. The map also highlights the difference between sea ice and icebergs and what that means in terms of sea level and the "freshness" of ocean water.

The Properties of Water
This map depicts the differences between fresh and salty water, and how those difference affect water's temperature and density.

The Hydrologic Cycle
The Hydrologic Cycle
This concept maps shows how the water cycle is connected to Earth processes such as precipitation and evaporation and how these processes can affect global climate. The map also highlights ties between the Aquarius satellite instrument, salinity, and climate.
