VIEWPOINTS
For some scientists, education and outreach is seen as a time-consuming addition to their research work. For Dr.
Peggy Fong, research and education and outreach are all intertwined with each other. Her graduate students go on
field trips with her, publish original research, and get involved with COSEE West activities at every level. They
become integral to her work with management agencies. Her undergraduate Marine Biology Quarter students participate
in outreach activities – whether writing for the local paper or making music videos.
Peggy's enthusiasm and energy stems from both a love of teaching and mentoring, and a deep concern for the sustainability
of the coastal marine ecosystems that she studies. All of which requires a balancing act - keeping field trips,
teaching, mentoring, writing, lab work, outreach, service and family life all humming along. The fact that she is
able to do this - and do it successfully - makes her a highly valued role model for young scientists.
