BALANCING EFFORTS & REWARDS

Making Research Relevant

Dr. Michael Kemp's involvement with COSEE Coastal Trends was a choice that he made, which has enriched his career as well as his outlook. All scientists have a finite amount of time, and getting involved in Education and Outreach (E&O) is always a choice, which may lead to writing one less paper or spending less time in the field. And finding scientists willing to commit time in the summer is certainly a challenge for COSEE Coastal Trends' program, though those that make the commitment always say it's been a positive and productive experience.

The University of Maryland credits involvement in E&O, encouraging faculty to get involved. Younger scientists have the urge to make a beneficial contribution to the world, and find a positive trend in the requirement of outreach by funding agencies, thus making research more relevant. They don't want to lose their ability to communicate with the rest of the world, including their own family members. Bridging two worlds takes agility and effort – often richly rewarded.
