Webinar 2: Human Impacts on Benthic Ecology Presented by Anne Simpson - June 19, 2012
Though many activities, whether natural or human-caused, can affect organisms living in and on marine sediments, there are several specific kinds of fishing gear that cause a significant disturbance to these organisms. In this webinar, Anne explores the commercial fishing practices of trawling and dredging and their short and long term effects on the benthic ecosystem. Webinar Archive You can watch a video of the webinar below. Below the video is also a link to the interactive concept map so that you can follow along with the presentation. Concept Map The webinar features a map entitled, "How do Human Fishing Activities Impact Soft Sediment Habitats?" You can explore the concept map in the window below, or save it to your own CLIMB account. Classrom Connections
Anne Simpson Anne Simpson is currently completing a PhD in Marine Biology at the University of Maine. Her dissertation research examines reproduction in cold and deep-water octocorals from the North Atlantic. While working on the reproductive processes of corals, she has identified and described several new species, including two new species of precious corals (Corallidae). Anne holds an MS in Oceanography from the University of Maine and a BS in Biology from Mary Washington University.University of Maine |
