COSEE-OS engages teachers, ocean scientists and informal educators in a broad range of programs. We have piloted and refined several workshop
models and offered other collaborative opportunities for scientists and educators to work as peers. The workshop models have developed over time
in response to participants' evaluation feedback and audience needs.
Below are some of the main OS workshop models. On the sidebar on the left you will find a complete list of archived workshops.
Scientist-Educator Collaborative (SEC) Workshops
This workshop model promotes collaboration between educators and scientists by using pedagogical techniques to deconstruct complex
science content. Ocean and Climate Literacy Fundamental concepts are used to match scientists' expertise with educator needs, and participants
work together to interactive create concept maps based on current scientific research.
Graduate Student/Faculty Workshops
In response to interest from graduate students and recommendations of research faculty, COSEE-OS is working with
three other COSEE Centers to adapt its "Scientist-Educator Collaborative" workshop model to focus on graduate student
professional development, and open new lines of communication between faculty and graduate students. Theis series of four
workshops includes one hosted at each of the four participating COSEE Centers: Ocean Systems, West, Networked Ocean World and
California.
Curriculum Development Workshop
In this pilot workshop, formal educators worked with UMaine faculty and graduate students to develop curriculum resources for their
own classrooms. Educators and ocean scientists collaboratively created concept maps linked to multimedia assets and explored authentic datasets for use in inquiry-based lessons.
Key Foundational Workshops
Early workshops tested models of scientist-educator collaboration to balance science content with pedagogical strategies that are commonly used to teach science concepts.
