As Dr. Gomes went through the concept mapping process, she realized that it was better to start broad, and then add details. She sees a connection to Dr. Roesler’s map in terms of the effect on terrestrial plant life. She hopes to take more time to fully explore many parts of these ocean and climate interactions, especially concerning carbon inputs. Her education team helped her to simplify the concept map by focusing on ocean-related topics. The focus question was simplified, and the map was reorganized so that there was more of a top to bottom, easy to follow flow. Students are always interested in the effects on biological systems, so the bottom level of concepts is dedicated mainly to effects of climate change. Dr. Gomes was really pleased with the final consensus map as it is much more accessible and engaging to high school students.
