About this Scientist:
Fei Chai is a professor at the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences and a member of the Ocean Modeling Group. His research areas include ecosystem modeling, tropical oceanography, El Niño and the ocean carbon cycle. He studies how physical and biological processes contribute to the carbon cycle, and how the biological pump transfers carbon into the deep ocean. Fei previously collaborated with COSEE-OS as a participating scientist in the Educator-Scientist Climate Change Workshop at the Darling Marine Center in November 2008. [more]

About this Educator:
Jennifer Albright teaches marine science at Tabor Academy in Marion, MA. She received her M.S. in Marine Biology and M.Ed. in Secondary Science Education from the University of Maine. Jenny has worked extensively with COSEE-OS. She assisted in numerous workshops and courses, and co-authored the teaching guide, Teaching Physical Concepts in Oceanography: An Inquiry-based Approach. Professor Fei Chai outlined the current understanding of, and debate concerning, climate change and global warming. He presented many useful graphs, charts, and diagrams showing evidence of the increases in temperature and carbon outputs, sea level rise, and the increased incidence of natural disasters. Because of the slow progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, an international conference was convened in 2010 to discuss climate intervention ideas that could be implemented in case of emergency. One of those is "ocean iron fertilization", a particular focus of Fei's research. He explained the research history and current limitations of this method and said that he and his colleagues are calling for continued research before such a method is implemented.

High school marine science teacher, Jennifer Albright, described her journey through graduate school where she worked closely with COSEE-OS and collaborated with scientists in the development of content-rich concept maps. She has been employed for almost two years at a private academy where she incorporates these tools in her classroom teaching. She also discussed an "Oceans First" curriculum at her school that takes advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of ocean science to integrate physical and chemical science into a biology course.

Twenty seven participants joined in from twelve states. Of the eight participants who filled out the post webinar survey, 75% said that the scientist presentation was "useful" or "very useful", and 75% also said that they felt more comfortable with the topic than they had before. 50% also said they now feel the topic is more relevant to their own work.
